The manufacturing landscape is evolving fast. As additive manufacturing (AM) technologies continue to advance, so do industry demands for speed, precision, and adaptability. For small to mid-sized manufacturers in Southwestern Pennsylvania, staying competitive means more than keeping up—it means investing in the skills that will define the future of production.
That’s why Catalyst Connection, in collaboration with The Barnes Global Advisors—recognized leaders in AM education—is proud to offer two no-cost, grant-funded training programs this August for incumbent workers. Hosted at our Mill 19 facility in Hazelwood, each session is limited to 30 participants and designed to build practical, forward-looking capabilities in additive manufacturing.
What is Additive Manufacturing, and Why Now?
Additive manufacturing refers to the process of building components layer by layer, instead of cutting away material like in traditional machining. While it was once used mostly for prototyping, AM is now being adopted for end-use production in sectors like aerospace, medical, defense, and tooling.
The benefits are clear. Reduced lead times, less material waste, lightweight components, complex geometries—these are no longer just theoretical. They are proven advantages that manufacturers are using to drive real performance gains.
However, tapping into those advantages requires more than just buying a 3D printer. Successful AM implementation depends on understanding the process, the materials, the limitations, and most importantly, how to design parts specifically for additive technologies. Without this foundational knowledge, companies risk underutilizing their investment or making costly mistakes.
Training Programs Designed for Real-World Application
Designing for Additive Manufacturing (August 18–20) This 2.5-day technical training is built for engineers, designers, and technicians who are already working with, or expect to be working with, additive systems. It covers design principles, material selection, part screening, and process workflows. The goal is to prepare participants to confidently design and support AM projects from concept to production.
Additive Manufacturing Fundamentals (August 21) This half-day session is geared toward executives, senior managers, and decision-makers. It focuses on AM processes, business cases, cost models, and strategic use cases. Participants will gain a solid understanding of where AM fits into broader operations and how to make
informed investment or adoption decisions.
Why It Matters
Additive manufacturing is not a passing trend. It is becoming a critical capability for manufacturers who want to improve agility, reduce costs, and position themselves for future opportunities. The companies that invest in understanding AM today will be the ones ready to take advantage of it tomorrow.
At Catalyst Connection, training is an opportunity to build that understanding, without the typical cost barrier. Last year’s sessions were extremely well received, and we expect this year’s to fill quickly. A second round of training is planned for early 2026, but the timing, location, and availability are still to be determined.
If your team is exploring AM, or if you simply want to ensure your leadership is informed and prepared, we encourage you to take advantage of these sessions. They are practical, proven, and purpose-built for manufacturers in our region.
